Victor J. Rohr

My relative who was my Grandpas cousin was on the USS Honolulu during all four years of WW2 according to his obituary. Below is his obituary in italics:

73 Years Old

Melrose, Minn

May 15, 1999

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 1999 at St. Mary's Catholic Church for Victor J. Rohr, 73, 

who died Saturday, May 15, 1999 at the Melrose Area Hospital. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Patton-Schad Funeral 

Home. Melrose Veteran's Honor Guard services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in 

Melrose followed by parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. Victor Rohr was born in Lufton to John and Theresa 

(Geiser) Rohr. He married Lucille Worden on Oct. 22, 1946,

 in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Wadena. He was in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II, 

aboard the USS Honolulu. After leaving the Navy, Vic attended telegrapher school in Minneapolis and 

then worked for the Great Northern Railroad, later known as Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired 

in 1986 after 40 years.Vic Rorh was a member of Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 in Melrose and was 

its quartermaster for 15 years. He also was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Melrose 

American Legion.Survivors include his wife; son and daughter, Michael of Corinth, Texas, and Patricia 

Carter of Minneapolis; sister, Delores Schmidt of Wadena; seven grandchildren; and one great-

grandchild.Vic was preceded in death by daughter and son, Helen Kempkes and Mark W.; and 

brothers, Clarence and Richard Rohr. The obituary was published on the St. Cloud Times web site.

There is a list of movies made about Pearl Harbor. The USS Honolulu was hit by a dropped bomb from a Japanese plane. She was a different looking ship afterward because she was given a different hull at a different harbor and put back into war.
